Maternity leave
Maternity leave is a formal leave of absence taken by a new mother after the birth or adoption of a child. This period of time is vital for those who need to heal after pregnancy and childbirth, bond with a newly born or adopted child, and care for a newborn baby.
Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), eligible employees must receive up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave (with job protection).
Offering paid maternity leave is not a federal requirement, although individual states may require it. An increasing number of private employers are incorporating paid family leave into their benefits packages.
